Registered and licensed practical nurses in South Carolina renew their licence through the South Carolina Board of Nursing, which sets a continuing-competency standard designed to keep clinical knowledge and skills current. The activities you complete must be relevant to safe nursing practice — you choose those that fit your role.

Under the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act, a nurse is accountable for maintaining competence and for responding appropriately in a clinical emergency. Being able to initiate resuscitation and basic life-saving measures is part of the standard of safe, competent care the Board expects.

These professions are subject to a mandatory continuing-education standard: the South Carolina Board of Nursing requires 30 contact hours per 2-year cycle for RNs and LPNs (45 for APRNs), with alternative competency pathways through national certification or documented practice. Basic life support is generally an employer or hospital requirement rather than a licence condition, though an accredited resuscitation course can count toward the contact hours when delivered by a recognized provider.

A recognized certificate meets that requirement for Certified Nursing Assistants working in long-term care, home care and assisted living.
