The first-aid requirement

In South Carolina, the Department of Social Services (DSS) requires every foster parent to complete CPR and first-aid training before final approval and to keep those certifications current while fostering. The training builds the ability to respond to everyday emergencies — injuries, choking, cardiac arrest — and is obtained from a recognized provider.

This certification is recognized by DSS as a condition of licensure, alongside the ongoing training foster parents must complete over each two-year renewal period. The certificate is one requirement in addition to the home study and assessment of parenting suitability, and it must be renewed to stay valid.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
